Yadis, php DOM, and RedHat

Hi - I was exploring the PHP OpenID Library v2 for building an OpenId
plugin for a CMS (http://bitweaver.org), and bumped into a snag with DOM
in php5 on CentOS (RHEL) 5.
Using the yum packager of CentOS, php5 installs with --disable-dom. Even
with delux dom is disabled. There are no rpms for the dom extension
since it is bundled with php 5 - so dynamically adding it as module
isn't even an option. This seems to suggest that anyone with this common
config of CentOS 5 with php 5 would have to recompile php to use Yadis
in OpenId Enabled. Not an attractive prospect. We think it would be self
defeating to require anyone wanting to use OpenId to recompile php.
CentOS 5 does install Php 5 with Simple XML
(http://us2.php.net/manual/en/book.simplexml.php). What are the
possibilities that Yadis could use Simple XML? or another XML parser
that would be easier to include than recompiling php?
Thanks for your time and consideration.
