Thanks for this info.  If you're at all connected with the folks who
maintain the PEAR package maintaner's guide and associated
documentation, it would be great if the docs said this; the only
reason we implemented support for both is because it was unclear
whether both were in use.  (Which is to say, merely noting that v1 is
"deprecated" in the docs does not give me any idea about actual
deployment, and in PHP-land, there is *plenty* of bitrot on deployed
PHP versions.)
